I often wonder, about some of the things I find wrong in homes.
Is it really only home inspectors that would ever notice these things?
I wish that I could take a poll of everyone that sees this post to find out how many of my readers recognize the problem before I “enlighten” them.

So—be honest—-what is the defect?
It is almost beyond my comprehension as to how anyone could look under this sink and not see something wrong. Did the installer seriously think nobody would notice? Did they seriously think this would get by the home inspector? Did the jurisdictional inspector miss it? (We all know the answer to this last question is that they don’t look under sinks.)
The fact that the drain has no trap—you know that thing that gets in the way of the garbage can—seems pretty obviously missing—and this is brand new construction!
While this defect would be great for the jumbo trash can, it might not be what anyone would consider a very desirable “air freshener.”

Charles:
I often see this set up but sometimes find the trap in the basement. Usually in set ups like this one there is no trap as it would be too far below the sink for it not to siphon out. You would still get the smell because the trap would be dry anyway.

Bryan – when you see the trap in the basement, does it comply with IRC P 3201.6, trap weir within 24″ vertical and 30″ horizontal of fixture outlet?
Gary in this case the installation is in the basement. UPC is even more restrictive and it would be difficult with many installations to get the trap below the floor level I think.
No P Trap
The sprayer hose will catch on the cold water shut off valve and be no good in kitchen water fights when you can’t get your water pistol filled fast enough.
Glenn, great point! It is important to always think like a 9 year old 🙂
What about the two drains ‘fighting’ over the same exit point? Surely there will be slow drainage issues, particularly when both sinks are draining at same time, by the looks of the fittings the sink on the right will drain slower….
Yes, indeed the water will get “confused.” However all will be OK with a proper trap installed.
Are the empty plastic containers under the sink for easy cleanout?
Most likely 🙂
